Elkader Register, Thur., 06 May 1880.
DIED - At his residence in Highland township, Saturday, May 1st, 1880, at 10:30 o'clock a.m., of a complication of diseases, William Sloan, aged 53 years.
Mr. Sloan was born in Scotland, in 1827, and emigrated to the United States when he was but 19 years of age, Settling in Kane County, Ill. After a short time he returned to the old country and married Miss Margaret Sloan, with whom he returned to Illinois where they resided until 1857, when he came to Iowa and settled in Highland township, where he resided until his death. His wife and seven children, the most of whom are grown up, are left to mourn the loss of a kind and considerate husband and father.
At an early age Mr. Sloan became a member of the Presbyterian church, and lived the life of an exemplary Christian. It is said that he never allowed his passion to control him, and under the most provoking insults remained cool and forbearing. Living a life of Christian kindness and charity, he was honored and respected by all who knew him, and his death is mourned as that of a good man gone to his eternal home to meet that Father whose precepts he so thoroughly obeyed.
The funeral occurred on Monday from his residence in Highland, and was attended by a large number of mourning friends.
