Funeral services for Mrs. Minnie F. Gusta, 91, a pioneer of Clayton county and one of Elkader's oldest residents, who died at her home here at 11:30 Sunday evening, April 29, following several years of failing health, were held at the home at 1:30 o'clock on Wednesday and from the Frieden's Evangelical church here at 2 o'clock. The Rev. George M. Richter officiated. Burial was in the East Side cemetery.

Minnie Schmidt Gusta was born in Dubuque on Jan. 1, 1854, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Schmidt and is the last of a family of nine children. She came to Clayton county with her parents when two years of age and was married to Gustaf Gusta at Elkader, Feb. 28, 1875. In 1880 they left by covered wagon for Nebraska where they homesteaded for the next twelve years.

In 1891 they returned here and located on a farm near Osborne in Cox Creek township where they lived until 1920 when they moved to Elkader.

Mr. and Mrs. Gusta celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in February 1937 and Mr. Gusta died the following August.

Surviving are all her six children, Mrs. Emma Homan, Waukon, Ia.; Mrs. Lena Meyer, Otto, Hugo and Amelia Gusta, all of Elkader; and Ernest Gusta, of Arlington. Also 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

_________

The photo of Minnie Gusta appeared in a news article at the time of their 60th wedding anniversary. Unfortunately I neglected to record the name & date of the paper, although it was probably the Clayton County Register.
