Elkader Register, Thur., 24 Jan. 1895. Elkport column.
On last Thursday night occurred the death of Conrod Roeder, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of our town. Mr. Roeder had been sick for the past six months with heart trouble and dropsy, and all that kind friends and medical aid could do was of no avail. The deceased was 64 years of age, and came to Elkport 37 years ago and has lived here ever since. He was a kind, good man and leaves a wife and two grown up children to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate husband and father. The funeral took place Sunday and was very largely attended, Rev. Fuchs officiating. The bereaved family have the sympathy of all in their sad affliction.

From the Wed., 23 Jan. 1895 issue of "Elkader Argus", Elkport section, page 8, column 1:
On Sunday occured the burial of John Conrad Roeder, one of the early settlers here it being very nearly 38 years since he first called Elkport “home.”
Deceased was born in Rodan, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, May 16, 1827. He was but a very young man when his father died, also a sister. In 1853, he with his mother and six of the children, emigrated to America, and settled at Sandusky, Ohio, then he was in Michigan awhile, after which he came to Dubuque, there he remained a few years and from there came to Elkport. He learned his trade, that of blacksmith, in Germany, which he loved and which he worked at steadily and earnestly until about six months ago About two years ago symptoms of dropsy were noticeable which finally caused his death at 12:45 A. M. on Friday, January 18. A kind husband and loving father has been taken, but he is now “at rest” and awaits the coming of his beloved ones consisting of his wife and two children, George Roeder, of Elkport, and Mrs. Carrie Cruel [sic], of Chicago, one son-in-law, one daughter-in-law, three grand-children, and four sisters, one of whom, Mrs. Buck [Buch], of Cedar Rapids, accompanied by her husband, attended the burial.
The bereaved ones have the sympathy of the entire community. The remains were intered in the Hall Cemetery by the side of his four children. Rev. Finch officiated.
[further on in same column] About twenty-eight from Mederville attended the burial of the late J. C. Roeder last Sunday. Also J. Corlett and F. Soll, of Elkader.
