Former McGregor Woman Died At Her Home In Cedar Rapids November 4
MCGREGOR: Mrs. Margaret Chapin, formerly of McGregor, died at her home in Cedar Rapids last Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1936, after a long illness.
Mrs. Chapin was the wife of Asahel Chapin, one of McGregor’s well-known early lawyers. Mr. Chapin died in 1921 [sic].
Mrs. Chapin was of Scotch ancestry, her parents, Robert and Jessie Sinclair, coming to America from Glasgow, Scotland.
She was born Dec. 17, 1851, in the Scotch settlement near where the town of Monona now stands, but her parents moved to McGregor when she was a small child. Her mother died when she was five years old and her father two years later.
She was then adopted by Judge John T. Stoneman. She was married to Mr. Chapin in 1876. She was a charter member of the Baptist church in McGregor, and after it was disbanded was an active worker in the Congregational church. She was also one of the organizers and charter members of the Tourist club, one of the oldest women’s clubs in this part of the state. Mrs. Chapin is survived by her daughters, Florence and Esther, of Cedar Rapids. Burial was made in Pleasant Grove cemetery at McGregor.
[NOTE: Her husband's death year was 1922 per their headstone, available at findagrave.]
