Elkader Register Thur., 07 Dec. 1893.
At the family residence in Volga City, Saturday evening, Dec. 2d, William A. Penfield laid down the cares of this life and passed to the reward that is promised to the just. He was born in Jefferson, Schoharie County, N.Y., Nov. 9th, 1819, and at his death was a little over 74 years of age. At the age of 5 years with his parents he moved to Penfield, Ohio, where, when reaching his majority, he learned the carpenter's trade. Jan. 15th, 1845, he married Miss Sarah L. Chapman in Medina County, O., who died Aug. 31, 1867. He then married Miss Lucy A. Chapman, who with one child, Mrs. Alta A. Brandenberg, survives him. Coming to Iowa in November, 1854, he settled on a Sperry township farm, and later moved to Volga City, establishing his furniture business in 1874, which has continued ever since.
Being a man to whom a public office was a public trust, Mr. Penfield has held those of justice of the peace, township clerk, assessor and county coroner, until his failing health forbade the care. In church, school and lodge matters he was the one to take responsibility and use it to the best advantage of all interested. Firm in his own convictions, he was ever kind and forbearing in his criticism of others' opinions and acts. To the poor and distressed he was a friend indeed. As a man he has walked upright before man and God, squaring his actions by the square of virtue and as such his many friends mourn his loss and honor his memory. To his family he was the affectionate husband and father. While they mourn over his absence from the home circle, yet they are comforted with the thought that the loved one has only gone before to that home not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
The funeral took place Tuesday under the auspices of Mountain Shade lodge, A.F. & A.M., of Volga, and was very largely attended by those who desired to attest their respect for the departed and sympathy for the living. Rev. Mr. Brush conducted the religious services.

We wish to make a correction in the obituary of William A. Penfield, which appeared in the REGISTER last week. The marriage of W. A. and Lucy A. Penfield was in 1868 instead of 1873.
