Elkader Register, Thur., 03 May 1894.
In Cox Creek twp., Clayton County, Iowa, April 26, 1894, of asthma and general debility, John Lamcke, aged 74 years, 10 months and 3 days, passed away. He was buried Saturday in the East Side cemetery under the auspices of the E. Boardman Post, No. 184, G.A.R., of which he was an honored member, Rev. Seifert officiating with religious services at the grave.
The subject of this sketch was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, June 23, 1819, where he grew to manhood. His father having died when he was a boy, to his lot fell the responsibilities of managing his father's sheep ranch until 1851 when he came to America, settling in Garnavillo, this county, where n 1853 he was married to Miss Minnie Brickman and for two years he followed farming. He then moved to Volga twp., where he purchased a farm and resided for seven years, when in August, 1862, believing it to be the duty of every patriotic citizen to answer his country's call for troops, he, with many others from this county, enlisted in Co. D, 27th Iowa Vols., serving his country faithfully for three years, having been in many hard fought battles. On August 8th, 1865, he was honorably discharged and returned to his family, his health somewhat impaired from the years of soldier life, he sold his farm and being familiar with sheep raising, moved his family to the farm of O. W. Crary, and took charge of Mr. Crary's sheep ranch in Fayette County for two years, when in 1868 he purchased a farm in Cox Creek township, where he lived the rest of his days. Much of the time he was able to do but very little work on account of an asthmatic affliction contracted while in the army. He leaves a wife and four daughters, Mrs. F. W. Murdoch, of San Francisco, Cal.; Mrs. H. H. C. Clemens, Parkersburg, Oregon, Mrs. Wm. Brand, of Chapman, Nebraska, and Mrs. M. E. Munger, Jr., of this place, who together mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent husband and father, and by many acquaintances as an accomodating neighbor and upright citizen.
