Elkader Register, Thur., 12 Apr. 1894. Volga column.
Mr. John Derling [sic], an old resident of this township, living four miles west of Volga, died very suddenly at his home Friday, April 6th. Two hours before his death he had been chopping wood. He came into the house and laid down, falling into a deep sleep which ended in death, paralysis being the cause. Had he lived until Sunday, April 8th, he would have been 71 years old. A wife and several grown children are left to mourn his death. Funeral services were held at the Paddleford school house Sunday, Rev. David Jewell preaching the discourse. A large number of sympathizing friends were present.
