Elkader Register, Thur., 15 Nov. 1891.
Cornelius Ryan was born in County Limerick, Ireland, March 29, 1829, and died at his home in Elkader November 5, 1891, at the age of 68 years, 7 months and 6 days. On February 1, 1848, at his native home he was married to Miss Hannora Kennedy, who now survives him. In 1849 he came to America, landing in New York City where he lived for three years. Falling in line with the tide of emigration westward, he came to Springfield, Ohio, where he remained for four years, when he renewed his journey toward the setting sun, reaching Clayton county in 1856. His first residence in this county was in Elkport, where he lived but six months, coming to Elkader in March, 1857. During the thirty-four years he lived in Elkader he was closely identified with her business interests and was for a long time one of the principal business men of our town. For a number of years he held the office of Justice of the Peace, in which it was his highest ambition to deal justly by those who were litigants at his court. Honesty, uprightness and charity were principal among the characteristics of C. Ryan. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Father Rielly and his body laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery Nov. 7, 1891. A widow, seven grown children and many friends are left to mourn his departure.
