Elkader Register, Thur., 5 Nov. 1891.
Joseph A. Kistler, a mechanic residing in West McGregor, committed suicide Wednesday afternoon by shooting himself in the head with a revolver, causing death instantly. The city marshal of McGregor and the deputy sheriff had called at his house to serve a writ of abatement and a warrant of arrest on his wife for selling liquor in violation of the prohibitory law. His wife got ready to go and Kistler went into an adjoining bedroom to get ready to go with the officers. Soon a revolver shot was heard and on entering the room he was found on the floor with his brains oozing out of his head. Despondency and the dread of probably having to go to jail was the cause. He leaves a wife and two children.
