Elkader Register, Thur., 20 Aug. 1891.
It becomes our painful duty to record the death of another of the pioneers of Clayton county. Alexander B. Atwood was born in the state of New Hampshire, December 20, 1813, and died at his home in Boardman Grove in this county Aug. 11, 1891. Mr. Atwood came to Iowa in 1840, and was for some time engaged with Sage & Thompson in the erection of the Elkader Mills. When the Mexican War broke out he enlisted as a member of Co. H, 16th United States Infantry, with which organization he served with credit until discharged therefrom on account of a gunshot wound on the left leg received while in the line of duty. After his discharge from the army in 1848 he returned to Iowa, where in 1852 he was married to Miss Sarah Patterson and settled upon a farm in Boardman Grove, where he raised a family of six children, two sons and four daughters, five of whom with their aged mother survive him. One son preceded him to the other shore. Mr. Atwood was a man of integrity, always honorable in his dealing with those with whom he chanced to sustain business relations. The funeral occurred on the 16th, and was conducted by Rev. J. D. Perry, of this place, after which all that was mortal of one who, during a long and useful life held the esteem of all who knew him, was laid to rest in the Patterson cemetery.
