Elkader Register, Thur., 02 July 1891. Elkport column.
A sad accident happened to Christian Kriese last Wednesday that ended fatally. Mr. Kruese and hired man were grubbing with a grubbing machine. Mr. Kruese was driving the horse and in some manner the sweep broke and flying back struck Mr. Kruese in the side throwing him about fifteen feet. He was taken home and a physician summoned who found him hurt internally and nothing could be done to save his life. After awful suffering he died about six hours after being hurt. Mr. Kruese was 64 years of age and had been a resident of Volga township for a great many years. He was an honorable and upright man and was greatly respected for his many good qualities. The funeral took place Friday and was largely attended, Rev. Fuchs officiating. The deceased leaves a wife and family to mourn the loss of a kind, affectionate husband and father. The bereaved family has the sympathy of all in their sad affliction.
(Note: Both spellings of the surname were used in the obit, as shown.)
