Another of our old Clayton county pioneers has passed away. In a few years there will be none left to tell of the trials and hardships that were endured to make a home in this once new country. At his home in Volga City, April 9, 1891, occurred the death of Welcome H. Phillips from the la grippe. He was born in Hampton, N.Y., May 20, 1807 and so was nearly 84 years old. He was married in 1828 to Losha Ann Geer, who, after 64 years of married life is left to travel a few years alone. The same year of their marriage they moved to Elgin, Ill., and to Iowa in 1855, locating in Sperry Twp., Clayton Co., which has been their home. Besides his wife there are left to mourn for him, seven children, twenty-eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. All his children were with him in his last hours but one, Mrs. P. H. Bevins, of Corning, who was unable to come. The funeral was held Sunday forenoon and was very largely attended. Rev. H. Williams, assisted by Rev. Ensign, conducted the services.
