Peter Dittmer, one of the early settlers of Clayton county, died at his home in Cox Creek township on Saturday morning, January 17th, 1891, after a short sickness with lung fever.
Deceased was born at Lassroene, province of Hanover, Germany, Dec. 6th, 1815, and consequently he was 75 years, 1 month and 11 days of age at the time of his death. He was married in his native place in 1850, and is survived by his aged wife, two sons and two daughters. Of his children Martin Dittmer and Mrs. Jacob Stemmer reside at Elkader. In 1860 he came to the United States first settling at Communia where he resided for three years, after which he purchased a farm in Cox Creek township, where he resided at the time of his death, highly respected by all who enjoyed the pleasure of his acquaintance. The funeral took place on Monday from his late residence, the pastor of the Strawberry Point Lutheran church officiating. His remains were followed to their last resting place in the Mederville cemetery by a large number of relatives and friends, the funeral being one of the largest ever held in the county. The afflicted family has the heart felt sympathy of all in their great loss.
