Elkader Register, Thur., 05 Dec. 1923.
On Saturday morning, Nov. 17, at the home of his nephews, John and Michael O'Day, near Littleport, occurred the death of John Murphy, a pioneer citizen of our community and member of St. Michael's parish of Garber. He was 66 years of age.
John Murphy spent his entire life in our midst and his honesty, integrity and upright life, together with neighborly acts of kindness and love, will keep his memory with us to the end of our lives.
Mr. Murphy was in failing health for some years, and some months ago was taken to the home of his nephews near Littleport where the best care and medical attention was given him, but to no avail. God called; and his spirit obeyed the summons.
He was the last surviving member of the Murphy family. Three sisters preceded him in death, viz: Mrs. Margaret O'Day, Miss Johanna Murphy and Anna Murphy dying in young childhood.
He leaves to mourn his departure from life, two nephews, John and Michael O'Day, and two nieces, Mrs. Mary Emmerson of Strawberry Point and Mrs. Margaret Conboy of Alberta, Michigan.
The funeral was held from the home of his nephews to St. Michael's Church at Garber, where the Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m., on Monday, Nov. 19, by the pastor, Rev. Daniel T. Minogue, and the last prayers were said at the graveside in St. Michael's cemetery.
May he rest in Peace.
The pallbearers were P. W. Conley, Frank Zapf, Austin McNamara, J. P. Zapf, Patrick McNamara and M. W. Conly. - Contributed.
