Elkader Register, Thur., 22 Nov. 1923. Strawberry Point column.
Josephine Schneider, daughter of Nicholas and Margaret Schneider, was born at Redwood, Jefferson Co., N.Y., May 3rd, 1844. She came with her parents to Iowa when eleven years old. For over fifty years she had been a resident in Strawberry Point. She was married to Peter Eugene Peck September 19, 1872. He preceded her in death December 5th, 1920. Mrs. Peck was one of a family of twelve children, three of whom are living: Mrs. Mary Howe of Greene, Iowa, Mrs. Amelia Farrell and Mrs. Helen Sweet of Greeley, Iowa, besides nieces and nephews. On June 8, 1888, Marietta Glidden came into her life and was later adopted as her daughter. Mrs. Peck underwent an operation for a malignant disease nearly two years ago and was much helped in health for a time. Three months ago she was confined to the home and after much suffering, bravely and uncomplainingly borne, passed to her rest in sleep Thursday, November 15, 1923, in the early afternoon aged 79 years, 6 months and 12 days. Mrs. Peck was devotedly attached to her home and church. She was a member of the Congregational Fellowship for fully thirty years. Beyond them she had no interests in life; they made up her whole world. From church school and Divine Worship she was seldom absent and until three months ago supported most loyally both services. She was not given to saying much but in fact that she was there meant much in itself. Her presence had something of a Benediction in it. Our sympathies are very truly with those who mourn her loss as mother, sister and friend, and especially to her adopted daughter who tended her mother in the last days with a rare devotion. Funeral services were held at the home and Congregational church Sunday afternoon, November 18th, the Rev. Wm. W. Maxwell officiating. Interment was afterwards made in the local cemetery. Messrs. Barnes, Esch, Davis, Ha_w__d, Carrier and Dr. I. P. Howard, members of the Men's class (The guild of St. Andrews) acted as pall bearers.
