Elkader Register, Thur., 15 Nov. 1923. Strawberry Point column.
Quite an excitement took place in the Brayton cafe Sunday evening shortly after 6 o'clock when O. B. Eales committed suicide. Mr. Eales conducted the Franklin Hotel barber shop and disposed of it a few weeks ago. Since that time he has been here off and on and last Sunday afternoon returned. He went to the Brayton Cafe and ordered supper and seemed to be in the best spirit, having finished eating he got up started toward the door as though to go out, when near it he turned and fired at Mrs. Brayton, who received a scalp wound. When she fell unconscious, he thought her dead, and turned the weapon on himself. He died immediately. An inquest was held and the body taken to the Franklin undertakers parlors. Mrs. Eales, who is at Maynard, was notified and came at once. A note was found in Mr. Eales pocket requesting his body be sent to his mother at New London, Mo., and Tuesday morning Mrs. Eales accompanied the remains there for interment.
