Elkader Register, Thur., 15 Nov. 1923.
John Charles Fred Stade was born in Read township Jan. 14, 1885, as the eldest son of Mr. John Stade and his wife Minnie Feil.
He was raised on a farm and received his schooling at Luana. He attended school at Luana and later on was teacher in the Sunday school of Henke's church.
He was married Jan. 21, 1909, to Mary Rohwedder in Clayton township and to this union five children were born, four boys and one girl: Almore, Harold, Lorenz and Clarence, (twins), and Alice.
The young couple moved to a farm in Garnavillo township later moving to Wagner township where they resided three years after which they moved to a farm near Giard. For five years they lived east of Farmersburg on the so-called Oelke Farm and then in 1919 they moved to the home place.
He took seriously ill in January of this year and in February it was necessary to make a transfusion of blood from his brother, Ernie, and twice from Fred.
He was in the hospital at different times until he was sent home about three weeks ago and since then he was confined to his bed. Since September he suffered at times very intense pain until death relieved him from all suffering on Nov. 7, fifteen minutes after seven p.m.
He was a good husband and father who loved to be with his family. He was a devoted Christian at ending to his spiritual needs by attendant divine services and teaching others the way of salvation, not only by words but by a good Christian life.
He reached the age of 38 years, nine months and seven days.
He leaves to mourn his grief-stricken wife, his five children, his parents, four brothers and two sisters: Charles Stade in Farmersburg township, Mrs. Minnie Rohwedder at Elkader, Fred at home, Mrs. Alma Behrndt at Elgin, Ernie Bohler at Elkader. His father preceded him in death 27 years ago and his brother George, May 4, 1923.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. K. W. Braun of Garnavillo at one o'clock p.m. Saturday, assisted by the Garnavillo church choir. The over crowded church and profusion of beautiful flowers gave evidence of the neighbors' respect for the deceased. The many kindnesses and the gifts of flowers were appreciated by those who were bereft. Interment was made in the Farmersburg cemetery with the following as pallbearers: Hy. Harnack, Hy. Henning, Fred Fascher, Hale Corlett and John Schmalfeld. - Contributed.
