Richard (Rich) Frank Hubbard, Jr, 67, of McGregor, Iowa, passed away at his home on December 24, 2021.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11:45 a.m. Saturday, January 8, 2022, at Backwoods Event Center in McGregor, Iowa, where services will follow. A private family burial will be held at a later date.
Rich was born March 23, 1954, in Louisville, Kentucky, the son of Richard Frank Hubbard and Helen Adkins Hubbard. His family relocated to Crofton, Maryland where he attended school and he was a graduate of Fork Union Military Academy. Rich’s mother passed away when he was 16 and his father later married Barbara Butler Hubbard.
Rich’s survivors include his wife Sheri, (whom after many years of companionship they were married on November 7, 2020 in Dubuque, Iowa by one of his oncology nurses who had found out they were not married), three children, Leanne (Greg) Gregerson of Rapid City, South Dakota, Richard (Rich) Hubbard, III (Tenikwa Cook) of Garnavillo, Iowa and William (Willie) Hubbard (Shelly) of West Union, Iowa, Step-children Justin (Kyla) Koons of Latimer, Iowa, Jennifer Koons (Mitch Wagner) of Monona, Iowa, Six Grandchildren, 4 Step-Grandchildren, Siblings Roxanne Hubbard, Ronnie (Marilyn) Hubbard, and Regina (Jeannie) Dolan (Terry), Step-siblings Karen Dickens, Charles Butler, Janet (Jan) Gibson, John Butler and an Aunt Dorothy (Doris) Peters, nieces and nephews. Ex-wives Sue Chaput and Linda Lemley Hubbard.
Proceeded in death are his parents, stepmom, grandparents, grandchildren Dakota, and Seth, step grandchild Cory, and a brother (Russell).
All through high school Rich had a paper route and after graduating he painted houses for a short period of time. He then moved to Illinois where he started working for G. P. Sullivan out of Cicero delivering appliances to Homemaker’s. For a short period of time he worked for Winston Advertising as an Ad Exec before he started working for Gary Spielman Plumbing where he earned his Master’s Degree in Plumbing. Rich didn’t like the Chicago area for his young family, so they relocated to Garnavillo, Iowa where he started a self-employed plumbing business before he started managing River City Plumbing, Heating and Cooling owned by the Elkader Coop. The Coop sold the business and he then went to work for Dillman Equipment in Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin, to retire in 2018 from Gencor-Bituma in Marquette, Iowa.
In Rich’s younger years all he wanted to do was play football. He was the Little League Commissioner in Illinois when his boys were in Little League and he loved spending time with his family (especially the grandkids) and friends. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, his camping friends who became family and sitting around the campfire enjoying a beer and telling stories. You would often find him tubing or kayaking the Upper Iowa River.
After being diagnosed with cancer Rich would tell everyone how his oncology doctor saved his life and gave him the extra time to spend with his family and friends. He had nothing but good things to say about the Oncology Department and all the staff at MercyOne in Dubuque, Iowa and at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa.
