Elkader Register, Thur., 11 Oct. 1923. Read Church Notes column.

It was an unspeakably sad and bitter hour as our departed sister closed her eyelids in death. God, the Faithful One, called her away on Wednesday, October 3rd, 1923, about 5:30 p.m. from this land of harm to the land of real charm, of this land of sadness to the land of gladness, of this time of adversity to that of prosperity.

Our departed sister is Mrs. Sophia Schmidt, nee Kamin. Her cradle stood at Hamburg, Germany. She saw this world's light October 14th, 1868. She was christened n the country of her birth. At the age of three years our departed sister came to this land of Old Glory, together with her parents. On April 2, 1882, she was confirmed by Rev. Seifert. She grew up under the sunshine of the Almighty's Grace. She was married to Wm. Schmidt, to this union 4 children were born. Arthur Schmidt, Wagner township; Mrs. Herman Schlake, Farmersburg township; Mrs. George Lembke, Read township; and one son, John, who preceded his mother May 19, 1914. This bitter grief was really hard for the mother to overcome. Our departed sister's father preceded her in death 14 years ago and her mother 37 years ago. Mrs. Schmidt's illness was first noticed by her family about 2 months ago. She herself did not realize how dangerous her condition was, but on the 13th of September Mrs. Schmidt went to the hospital at West Union, Iowa, where a specialist from Chicago and local physicians performed a painful operation three days after, but her condition became worse. Through all her suffering she was patient and was longing for rest. Before her life came to a close her pastor, Rev. Wm. Wuestenberg of Clayton Center gave her the Lord's Supper. She took it in connection with the mournful husband and deeply afflicted children.

All that loving hands of her family and a trained nurse could do was done. Let me mention that during her grave illness a nurse whose name is Mrs. Carrie Birdsall, from Fayette, Iowa, took special care of our departed sister like a mother of her sick child. She reached the age of 54 years, 11 months and 10 days.

She is also survived by 4 grandchilden, who mourn the bitter loss of their beloved Grandma.

Her life, suffering and death are standing in the bright light of Jerimiah, 31-3. "I have loved thee with an everlasting love; therefore with loving kindness have I drawn thee, said the Lord."

Mrs. Schmidt found her last resting place on the old cemetery of the Zions Lutheran church at Clayton Center. Her pastor Rev. Wm. Wuestenberg officiating. May our departed sister rest in peace.

Blessed are the meek and contrite,
Who in Jesus fall asleep;
Blessed are the saints forever
Their untiring vigils keep.
They are from their labors resting,
God has wiped away their tears.
They are dwelling in the kingdom
Free from all their sins and fears."
