Elkader Register, Thur., 27 Sept. 1923. Strawberry Point column.

The death of Mrs. Bertha Marquardt, aged 81 years, occurred last Tuesday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Will Cook, at Walker, Iowa. Mrs. Marquardt fell on the icy sidewalk last March and received a broken limb and three weeks ago she left home and two she spent in the Peoples' Hospital at Independence in hopes of being benefitted but to no avail and she was taken to the home of her daughter at Walker. The remains were brought to her home Wednesday and the funeral services occurred at the Lutheran church Thursday afternoon conducted by Rev. Fritschel who paid a fine tribute to the life, character of the departed one. She leaves three daughters and one son: Mrs. Emma Schug of this place, Mrs. Anna Cook of Walker, Mrs. Mary Hopp of Belmont, Mont., and Martin Marquardt of this place, eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren besides other relatives and a host of friends. The interment took place in the family lot in our beautiful cemetery. Bertha Buehrer, was born in Switzerland in 18__. At the age of seven her parents died and she with her foster parents came to Dubuque, where she resided a short time after coming to Strawberry Point where she has since lived. January 1st, 1869, she was married to Herman Marquardt who preceded her in death Jan. 22, 1916. Although no member of any church she attended the German Lutheran. She always enjoyed her friends calling on her and especially since she has been confined to her home since last March. As into each life, so into her life came sorrow and care, but she bore all with fortitude and patience. To her great host of friends her memory is precious and she "being dead, yet Speaketh." as trees display their winter's sleep so do virtues of men and women shine out as they fall into the restfulness of the tomb.

"So let her sleep that dreamless sleep.
Our sorrows clustering round her head
Be comforted ye loved who weep
She lives with God. She is not dead."
