Jack was born April 1, 1924 near Garnavillo, Iowa to Edward and Marie (Helle) Nieland. He was educated in the area attending rural school. At the age of fourteen Jack and his family moved to Guttenberg where he attended High School and did farm labor.
Jack entered the United States Navy in 1944 and was honorably discharged in 1946.
Jack was united in marriage to Jeanette Gansemer on April 22, 1947 at Dyersville, Iowa. Ten children were born to this union. Together they resided in the Edgewood area where Jack farmed until 1961 when he was disabled. They have resided at their present residence since 1960.
Jack died at his residence Wednesday afternoon, November 20, 1991. He was sixty seven years of age. Jack was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church and the Edgewood American Legion Post #512.
Survivors include his wife Jeanette, six daughters: Mrs. David (Sheila) Roof of Petoskey, Mich.; Janice Firzlaff of Dubuque, Iowa; Mrs. Kyle (Phyllis) Hagen of Accokeek, Maryland; Mrs. Rick (Debra) Osborn of Marshalltown, Iowa; Mrs. Kurt (Marjorie) Gardner of Reedsport, Oregon and Mrs. Jeff (Patty) Skiles of Waterloo, Iowa; two sons Curtis and his wife Cindy of Port Republic, Maryland and Bill and his wife Kristy of Santee, Calif.; twelve grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Walke and Germaine Weyant, both of Guttenberg, Iowa; ; and a brother, Joseph of Kansas City, Kansas.
Jack was preceded in death by two infant sons, Dean Joseph and Richard Allen; an infant grandson Adam Skiles; two brothers; two sisters and by his parents.
Memorial services were held Monday, November 25, 1991 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Edgewood. Officiating the ceremony was Rev. Clarence L. Frana. Arrangements were handled by Leonard-Vernon Funeral Home, Edgewood, Iowa.

The following additional info. was included in a shorter obituary published in the Cedar Rapids Gazette, Nov. 22, 1991:
"The body was donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine, Leonard-Vernon Funeral Home in charge of arrangements."
