Elkader Register, Thur., 15 Feb. 1923.

Carl Jacob Reimer was born Sept. 28, 1844, in Mecklenburg, Schwerin, Germany, and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter Sadawasser, Elkader, Iowa, at the noon hour on Saturday, February 10, 1923, at the age of 78 years, 4 months and 12 days.

Having spent the days of his childhood and young manhood in his native country until the age of 22 years, he came to America in 1866 and for about a year found employment and made his home in Detroit, Mich. In 1867 he came west to Clayton county, Iowa, which was his home the greater part of his life.

In 1870 he was united in marriage with Anna Speiser. The couple went to housekeeping on a farm in Volga township. Nine children were born to this union of which two died in infancy and one daughter, Mrs. Carolina Fritz, died very suddenly of influenza on February 4, 1920.

He sustained a great loss when on December 19, 1906, his faithful wife, who had been a helpmate to him in the very sense of the word, was called from his side by the grim messenger, death. Two years later in 1908 he went to Minneapolis, Minn., to make his home with his youngest daughter, Mrs. Magdalena Sadawasser, and when some years ago the daughter's family moved to Elkader, he came with them.

For a number of years he was troubled with asthma, which at times caused great distress, and called for special attention and care from loving hearts and hands. This loving care he surely received, and he truly appreciated every word of cheer and every deed of love and kindness, and was very grateful for it.

At times of late it was indeed touching (several words blurred) how he was concerned about the welfare of his children and grandchildren, his very last words being words of love and admonition to his little grandson, William. Now he has closed his eyes in the last sleep, and rests from his labors.

He is survived by six children, Henry Reimer, William C. Reimer and Lena Sadawasser, of Elkader, Charles Reimer, Herman Reimer and Louisa Splies, of Garnavillo. He also leaves 22 grandchildren, other relatives and many old time friends and neighbors.

Funeral services were held on Monday February 12th, at the home conducted by Reverend Franke, and at the St. Paul's Lutheran church at Garnavillo, of which the departed had been a member for almost 40 years. At the church and at the Garnavillo cemetery Rev. Wm. K. Braun officiated.
