George Russell, a former resident of Elkader, Iowa, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George H. Perry, at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on February 5th, 1923, at the age of nearly ninety years. The remains were brought here last Wednesday and the funeral was held from the home of his brother, Edward Russell, with interment in the East Side cemetery, Rev. C. H. Franke of the Evangelical church officiating.
When Mr. Russell came to Elkader in 1852 this town was but a hamlet of eight houses and strictly pioneer conditions prevailed at that time. Indians were numerous and followed trails into Elkader almost daily.
George Russell was born in Cateraugus Co., New York, on June 16, 1833. He moved to Crawford Co., Pennsylvania, when a child and located pemanently in Elkader in the spring of 1852. He was united in marriage with Mary F. Baker, on October 12, 1856, after which (several words blurred) on different farms near Elkader (several words blurred) when they retired from farming (several words blurred) in Elkader.
Since the death of Mrs. Russell in 19__, Mr. Russell has made his home with his four children and with his brother, Edward Russell of this place. On January 22, Mr. Russell reached the home of his daughter, Mrs. George H. Perry, at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and was taken sick the fourth day after, and passed away February 5th.
The four children of the deceased are: F. G. Russell, of Omaha; C. L. Russell, of Broadus, Montana; Mrs. L. L. Diers, of Belltower, Montana; and Mrs. George H. Perry, of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
His death has caused sadness in many hearts and the sincere sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved relatives.
