Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 21 Nov. 1918.
Julia A. Barrett was born in the city of New Orleans, Jan. 5, 1840, and died at Dubuque in November, 1918, at the advanced age of nearly 79 years.
At the age of seven years she came with her parents to Clayton county, where she has since resided until about two months ago, when she moved to Dubuque with her daughter. In 1863, she was married to J. C. Collins, who preceded her in death about nine years ago, since then she has lived with her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Roach.
Grandma Collins, as she was familiarly called, was unselfish in her devotion to her home, family ad friends, and it was in doing for others her only pleasure was found. Although advanced in years, she retained all her senses, with her mind keen until the last. She lived to know that peace had been declared, something for which she had long prayed. Always charitable in word and action toward her neighbor, she will not be soon forgotten by those who knew and loved her, particularly children, of whom she was especially fond.
Funeral services were held in St. Joseph's church Thursday morning by Rev. J. P. Taken, and were largely attended showing the esteem in which deceased was held in the community, where she lived for 72 years. The remains were taken to Garnavillo and laid to rest beside her husband and son. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. D. J. O'neil and Mrs. Margaret Roach, four grandchildren, all of Dubuque, one brother, T. H. Barrett, of Castalia, all of whom were in attendance at the funeral.
Those from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Geo. Weigand, Dubuque; Thos. McGaheran, Clermont; Mr. and Mrs. James Dunn, West Union; Mrs. Mary O'Connor, Garber.
