Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 10 Oct. 1918. St. Olaf column.
The death of John F. Upton occurred at his home at Elkader, Sunday evening, Oct. 6th, at 9 o'clock p.m. He was eighty-two years, one month, and 18 days of age. He had been in poor health for several months and pneumonia finally developed, hastening his death.
Mr. Upton was born in Baltimore, Md., Sept. 18, 1836. He was the son of Wm. and Mary A. Upton. He came to Clayton county in 1851 at about fifteen years of age, and has made it his home ever since. On Oct. 22, 1859, he was married to Miss Amelia Russell, of Elkader, and for years they lived on a farm near Elkader. About ten years ago he retired from active work and moved to Elkader, with his family, living here up to the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife and four children, two sons, Charles of Volga, and Edward at home, two daughters, Mrs. James Kelleher of Clermont, and Mrs. Wallace Lamphere of Elkader, with ten grandchildren. Mr. Upton was for years one of the substantial farmers of this township, taking an active interest in all public affairs. Of a cheery and friendly disposition he greatly enjoyed visiting with his many friends. While most of his intimate circle preceded him to the Great Beyond, there are still many who will miss his cheery greeting. All sympathize with those who sorrow for a loved one.
The funeral took place Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 10 o'clock a.m. at St. Joseph's church, Rev. J. P. Taken officiating at the services and burial was made in the East Side cemetery.
