Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 17 Oct. 1918.
Mrs. Henrietta Cornelius, nee Haddle, died in Lodomillo township on Oct. 10 at an age of 85 years and 8 days.
The deceased was born at Nogo Prov. Posen Germany, where she also grew to womanhood. Soon after she was married to Frederick W. Cornelius in the town of her birth, she came to America with her husband in the year 1855. It was a long journey at that time, leaving their home country at Bremen, they were on the ocean for six weeks, finally landing at New Orleans, La. From here the journey went on by steamboat on the Mississippi river to Cairo, Ill., then by rail to Chicago and from there to Guttenberg, finally settling down near Osterdock. At that time the country around Guttenberg was very sparsely settled. It was a common occurance to see indians making their trips through that vicinity. As a pioneer family, bearing the hardships of a new country, they lived here near Osterdock for ten years. In 1865 they moved to Lodomillo township, to the farm on which deceased departed this life.
Nine children were given to her. Of these, two died in infancy, while two sons, Herman and Edward, in advanced years, preceded their mother in death. Three sons and two daughters remain to mourn the loss of a devoted mother, Fred and Gustav, at Riceville, Iowa; Henry on the old homestead; Mrs. Alvina Paulie at Mt. Angel, Ore, and Mrs. Minnie Fritz at Barron, Wis.
On June 22, 1896, her husband left her a mourning widow. Since then her youngest son Henry assisted the mother sparing no effort to make her declining days filled with sunshine and good cheer.
She had been failing in health for some time. Only a few days ago she however grew worse. On last Thursday forenoon the good Lord took her from this life of sorrow to a better land.
Funeral services were held at the home of the deceased, conducted by Rev. Fritschel, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, and burial was in the Littleport cemetery, by the side of her departed husband. May she rest in peace.
