Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 18 Apr. 1918.

This community was surprised and shocked on Sunday morning to learn that Frank Landon, Civil War veteran and a member of the Masonic fraternity here, had committed suicide in his apartments in the Molumby block about nine o'clock.

Mr. Landon had been in poor health for a number of years, suffering from asthma. Two weeks ago he caught a severe cold and had since been worse. It is thought that poor health and depression preyed on his mind to such an extent that he was led to this act.

He shot himself above the heart with a revolver while his relatives were absent from the rooms.

Frank Landon was born June 4, 1845, at Nashville, Tennessee, and passed away at his home in this city on Sunday morning, April 14, 1918.

In 187_, he was united in marriage with Miss Marie Slater of Dayton, Michigan. In 1881, they moved to Iroquois, S.D., where they engaged in the business of general merchandising. Their next and last move was to Elkader, where Mrs. Landon passed away four years ago. Two children were born to this union, May at home, and Courtlyn, of Watertown, S.D., also three grandchildren survive, Curtis J. of Elkader, and Anita and Mildred of Watertown, and one brother, Jasper Landon, seven brothers and two sisters having preceded him in death.

Mr. Landon was a highly respected citizen of Elkader, having resided here for twenty-three years. He was a member of the Congregational church, also belonging to the G.A.R., the Masonic lodge of Elkader and the Ancient Order of United Workmen of Iroquois, S.D. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having enlisted in Co. D. of Indiana.

Funeral services took place Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the Congregational church, Rev. Franke and H. D. Brown officiating, and burial was made in the East Side cemetery. The Masons had charge of the services at the cemetery.
