Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 07 Mar. 1918. Strawberry Point column.

John Hiram Huntington, son of L. E. and Irene Deyo Huntington, was born in Lodomillo township, Clayton county, Iowa, July 27, 1889, and died at Waterloo, Tuesday, Feb. 26, 1918, at the age of 28 years, 7 months and 29 days. Strawberry Point and vicinity was his boyhood home. Wishing to see more of the world, he went to New York in March, 1913. June 14, 1914, he married Miss Bessie Hayes, of McGraw, N.Y. In October, of the same year, he returned with his bride to Strawberry Point where they resided until October, 1916, when they removed to Winthrop, Iowa, and from there to Waterloo in July, 1917, where he met his death at the post of duty. Mr. Huntington was motorman and during the storm of last Monday, the conductor on the interurban car failed to see the signal and crashed in the local car. Onlookers said had Mr. Huntington left his car he could have saved himself, but he preferred to save the lives in his care and bravely did his duty with the result that all on the car escaped with but slight injuries, but he was so badly hurt that death followed in a few hours. During the Kirkland meetings here two years ago, Mr. Huntington and his young wife became Christians and they with so many others united with the M.E. church here on that beautiful Sunday morning. He leaves beside the broken hearted wife, his father and mother, two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Ridihalgh, of Strawberry Point, and Mrs. Helen Irwin of Tucson, Arizona, who was unable to be present on account of sickness, and three brothers, Elmer of Waterloo, Bert of Wood and Charley at home and other relatives who with a host of friends regret his untimely death. The remains were brought here Thursday and the funeral services occurred at the M.E. church, conducted by Rev. C. J. Rose, his former pastor, but now of Masonville, assisted by Rev. E. D. Wells. Interment took place in our beautiful cemetery. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the beeaved ones.
