McGregor Pearl Dealer Stricken.
W.H.C. Elwell, 82, Dies of Heart Attack.W. H. C. Elwell, 82, said to be the largest dealer in river pearls in the United States, died of a heart attack in his shop in McGregor Sunday afternoon.
Mr. Elwell was a pioneer in the pearl business 50 years ago when pearls worth thousands of dollars were found in clams in the upper Mississippi river. Since then he has operated a pearl and curio shop in McGregor which was a mecca for tourists. Jewelers throughout the United States and as far away as India and China were included among his customers.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Dean F. H. Elwell of the University of Wisconsin college of commerce; two daughters, Mrs. L. P. Bickel, McGregor, and Prof. Mary Elwell of the faculty of Connecticut State Teachers college, Willimantic, Conn.
