Rodney Theodore Fox, 84, Ames, died Sunday of respiratory failure at Northcrest Retirement Community. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 11 in the Green Room at Northcrest Retirement Community.

Rodney Fox was born near Arlington to Buel K. and Eva F. Fox. He moved to Ames in 1919. He was a graduate of Ames High School, a 1930 graduate of Iowa State College and a 1941 graduate of Northwestern University. He was editor of the Iowa State Student and vice-president of the Cardinal Guild at Iowa State University. He joined the Iowa State University faculty in 1936.

Except for 3 1/2 years service in the Army during World War II, he taught continuously in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Iowa State University until his retirement in 1977. In 1971 he received an Outstanding Teacher Award, and in 1972, he was presented a Faculty Citation for long outstanding and inspiring service from the Honors and Awards Committee of the Iowa State Alumni Association.

He was a founding member and secretary of the Ames Heritage Association, and was the first editor of the Association's newsletter "The Intelligencer". He was a member of Kiwanis.

Survivors include a niece, Karen Kelley of Minneapolis Minn., a nephew, Kirk Fox of Potomac, Md., and a niece-in-law, Mrs. John K. Fox of Denver, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Kirk Fox, and a sister, Nettie Fox.

1994 committal service:

Relatives and friends gathered Saturday for an 11 a.m. dinner at the Old Volga City Opera House in Volga before traveling to the Ross and Tillie Ridenour farm located between Arlington and Volga for memorial and committal services for Rodney T. Fox, an Arlington area native.

His death at 84 years occurred December 29, 1991 at Ames. He was a professor at Iowa State University, Ames. He donated his body to science for study.

When his sister Nettie Fox died, it was her wish to be cremated and her ashes returned to the country-side which is now the Ridenour fam and where her brother's ashes returned Saturday as was his wish.

Pastor Jerome Godson of St. Paul and St. Sebald Lutheran Churches conducted the final rites on a shaded hillside on the farm in early afternoon.
