Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 29 Nov. 1917.

The sudden death of George Bachtell, of Elkader, last Monday afternoon, was a surprise and shock to the people here. He had been in good health and was, at the time death took him, working with the corn shredding crew at the Charles Rothmeyer farm three miles out on the West Union road.

He arose Monday morning feeling in good health and went out to the farm where he was to help in the shredding, working all morning and until about three o'clock in the afternoon when, without a warning symptom, he collapsed and died almost instantly.

George E. Bachtell was born in Volga City, Clayton county, Iowa, Oct. 18, 1863, and died Nov. 26, 1917, being 54 years, 1 month and 8 days of age.

He was a son of David and Delia Bachtell and lived for many years in Volga City, where he followed the business of barber. On July 16, 1890, he was married to Jennie Rinkert. One child was born to this union - Frances, who died in 1892. He was four years in the livery business in Elkader, coming here in 1907, and for the last few years has been occupied in the breeding and selling of blooded horses.

His father and mother spent the latter portion of their lives in McGregor, where the mother still lives and where his father died seven years ago. Besides the wife and the mother, he is survived by seven brothers and one sister, namely, Ed and Ray, of Ye_er, Wash.; Charles, of McGregor; Elmer, of Arlington; Vernon, of McGregor; Ernest, of St. Olaf; Warner, of Anamosa, and Mrs. Leafie Henderson, of Cedar Rapids.

The funeral was held on Wednesday at 1 p.m., at the Ev. Frieden's church, at Elkader, Rev. C. H. Franke officiating. Burial was in the Volga City cemetery.

George Bachtell had a large circle of friends in Clayton county who will feel a personal loss in his passing. Their sympathy goes out to the bereaved wife, and to the mother, brothers and sister in their bereavement.
