Carl Henry Backhaus was born on Feb. 13, 1837, in Westphalen, Prussia, Germany. In 1845 the family came from Germany, settling in St. Louis and two years later they came to Garnavillo, where they remained. In 1861 he was married to Kathrina Walker, whose death occurred in 1911. Nine children blessed this union, four of whom preceded the father in death. One daughter, Mrs. Sophia Henning, of Farmersburg, John Herman and Henry, of Manly, and August, of Garnavillo, mourn his death. Since the death of his wife he has made his home with his son August, where he passed away on Tuesday, June 26th, 1917, after a two weeks illness of pneumonia. Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon in Ceres, Rev. Bosholm officiating.
