Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 19 Apr. 1917. Littleport column.

After an illness covering many months Herman John Henry Becker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Becker of Elkport, Iowa, passed away at his home in Ridgeway on Monday, April 9th, at the age of 35 years and 9 months. He was born at Elkport, Iowa, July 9th, 1881. On October 26th, 1904, he was married to Miss Ella May Huges, of Littleport, and to this union four children were born, Donovan Earl, Inez Mildred, Dorothy Catherine and Howard Burrus.

On March 29th, 1896, Mr. Becker was confirmed in the German Lutheran Church at Elkport.

In November, 1915, Mr. Becker began in business in Ridgeway as a harness maker and though not robust in health at that time, he bravely kept at his place of business until a few months ago, when failing health obliged him to give up work entirely. He made a brave fight for life and only a few days ago walked down to his former place of business, but was to weak to reach home without assistance and gradually sank until his release from suffering came on Monday afternoon.

Mr. Becker was a man of good habits and only a short time ago received the sacrament from the hand of Rev. G. M. Shoemaker, who during the illness of this patient sufferer often read to him from the word of God and prayed with him to the holy One who can strengthen weak humanity as it comes to the close of life and is about at the "Crossing of the Bar" to the life beyond, where little Howard, who preceded his father by two weeks, was awaiting his coming.

Besides his father, Mother, brother, three sisters and other relatives, there remains to mourn his loss the faithful wife and three children.

The sympathy of friends and neighbors is extended to Mrs. Becker and her children at this time of sore bereavement and may the comfort of Him who has promised to comfort the fatherless and the widow in affliction, be theirs at this time.

The funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Becker's father, B. Hughes, conducted by Rev. Paulsen, of Elkport, the body being brought here from Ridgeway. Interment in the cemetery south of town beside his infant son Howard.
