Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 15 Feb. 1917.
Although he has been in poor health for many years, the death of John Erickson, Tuesday, was a surprise and shock to relatives and friends.
John Erickson was born at Holland, Norway, August 19th, 1840, and died at Elkader, Iowa, his home, at 11 o'clock a.m., Tuesday, February 14th, 1917, aged 76 years, 5 months and 26 days. His parents were Anna and Erick Erickson.
Mr. Erickson came to America and to Clayton County in 1866. Five years later he was married to Christena Anderson at Marion, Iowa. The date of this marriage was January 26th, 1871. To this union eleven children were born, namely: Edward, now living in Highland township; Albert, of Minneapolis; August, dead; Anna Marie, dead; Bertha Johanna, dead; Caroline, dead; August, dead; Christena, dead; twins - Benjamin, of Marion, and Levi, of Farmersburg townships; and Clara, at home.
For twenty years Mr. and Mrs. Erickson owned and operated a farm in Highland township, then sold and bought in Marion township, where they remained until they sold and removed to Elkader in 1909, thus living in the last named township eighteen years.
Mr. Erickson has been a resident of Elkader eight years, but his health has been such in all that time that he has not been able to be out and meet people, consequently his personal acquaintance in town was somewhat limited. For twenty-five years he has been ailing.
He is survived by his wife, four sons, daughter, four grandchildren and his sister, Mrs. Hans Halverson, of Lamberton, Minn.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, at the residence, Rev. Isaac Cassel officiating. The remains will then be taken to the Highland Lutheran Church, he being a member of that church, where services are to be conducted by Rev. Hjostholm. Burial will be in the Highland cemetery.
