Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 15 Feb. 1917.

John F. Meyer, the subject of this sketch, was born March 1st, 1844, in Germany. When eleven years old he came with his parents to this country. The family for three years made their home in Toledo, Ohio, where John attended school. In 1857 he came to Clayton County, Iowa, and worked on a farm in Cox Creek township. On April 29th, 1860, he was united in marriage with Mary Peick.

For the next three years the young married couple lived at Littleport, Iowa, after which they moved to Elkader, where Mr. Meyer was engaged in business for a few years. Again they moved onto a farm in Boardman township.

Their union was blessed with eight children, two of whom preceded their father in death. On January 5th, 1891, the faithful companion and helpmate passed away, which was a great loss to the husband and children. For some years the children kept house for their father, until in May, 1897, when Mr. Meyer was married to his second wife, Barbara Thompson. This union proved to be very brief, for she died the same year, and again he was left a widower.

The last years he made his home with his son Christ and family, where he received the best of care from children and grandchildren.

On February 1st he was suddenly taken sick. Everything possible was done to prolong the life of the beloved father and grandfather, but his appointed time had come. He passed away on Monday, February 12th, at 4:30 o'clock in the afternoon, at the good old age of 72 years, 11 months and 11 days.

His departure is mourned by three sons and three daughters, viz: Mrs. Henry Dohrer, William Meyer, Christ Meyer, Mrs. Louis Kling, Ernest Meyer and Mrs. Charles Dohrer.

He also leaves twenty-six grandchildren, one brother, George Meyer, of Motor, one sister, Mrs. John Warnick of near Littleport, and other relatives and many old-time friends and neighbors.

The funeral services were held at the Ev. Frieden's Church today at one o'clock p.m., Rev. C. H. Franke officiating. The services at the grave were taken in charge of Rev. Cassel. A very large number of people, mostly old friends and neighbors, were present at both the graveside and church ceremonies.

The son Christ, who has been very ill with rheumatism, was unable to be present at these last services for his father.
