Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 09 Dec. 1909. Garnavillo column.

Frederick Wilhelm Kuhlman was born Aug. 26, 1830, at Westen, Amt Dephaltz, in the province of Hanover. His early boyhood days were spent with his parents until 1847, at which time they were compelled to leave the old home and came to the land, across the great ocean, to America. After a journey of sixty days they at last reached New Orleans. They continued their journey up the Mississippi River to Ohio and settled at New Bremen. Mr. Kuhlman was but 17 years of age at this time, when with some friends he started west. Their Westward journey ended at Garnavillo. Here he got work as a mill hand, but soon went to Patch Grove, Wis., where he remained a short time. He soon decided to return to Garnavillo, which he did, and commenced farming.

On November 27, 1862, he was married to Maria Dahl. To this union five children were born, Wilhelmina, married to Henry Wilke, of this place; Henry, married to Hannah Aulwes, also of Garnavillo; and George, Bertha and Adelia at home.

He was naturally strong of body until the death of his wife, which occurred on June 27th, 1908, since which time he has been gradually failing in health and strength. The final summons came at noon on Thursday, Dec. 2nd, when he was relieved of his sufferings. His five children were at his bedside when death called him away. All that loving hands could do for him was done, but of no avail. He died at the age of 79 years, 3 months and 5 days. He was a true member of the St. Paul's church and also one of the founders of the society known as the Garnavillo Socialer Turn Verein.

The funeral occurred Sunday afternoon at one o'clock, burial taking place in the new cemetery. The Turn Verein accompanied the remains of the departed member to its final resting place.

Those left to mourn his death are Wilhelmina, Henry, George, Bertha and Adelia, two grandchildren, Lester and Homer Wilke, and one brother living in Kansas. The following were present from abroad: Mr. and Mrs. Aug. Dahl and son of Postville; Mrs. Ed Felcher, of Nashua, Ia.; and Bernard Schroeder, of Emmetsburg, Ia.
