Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 09 Dec. 1909. Monona column.
August Tangeman was a native of the state of Ohio. His birthplace was the village of Braman, and the day was Christmas Day, 1838. For nine years he lived there, and then the parents took their family to Iowa, settling at Garnavillo, Clayton county. Thus the deceased has been numbered among the early pioneers and settlers of the state. It was at Garnavillo that he grew from youth to manhood, being furnished with education the times afforded. He became enured to the hardships that were common in those days in a new settled territory. Here too, he was married in 1861, but afterward lived in Benton County, Iowa, for about six years. This and the four years spent in Michigan, not long ago, constituted the only periods of residence away from this neighborhood. He was bereaved of his wife 15 years after marriage, their first born, a son, having preceded her to the grave, and two daughters have followed since.
Just 31 years ago yesterday, Nov. 28th, Mrs. Hargesheimer became his wife, and a mother to his children, bringing three of her own to rear with them. The family now consisted of themselves and nine children, seven of whom survive: August, of Stein, Minn., Andrew, of Bever Creek, Mich., George, of Lewiston, Mich., Mrs. Sutcliff, of Mason City, Iowa, and Laur_ and Ed, of Monon_, all of whom were present at the funeral. The deceased's wife departed this life last April. There survives also of his father's family, only a brother, George, who resides at LeMars, Iowa, who was present at the funeral.
Mr. Tangeman was well known in this community, having been engaged in milling at Volney for a quarter century. Seven years ago last spring he sold his property at Volney and went to Michigan, but after four years residence there, returned to Monona. He was a rugged built man but had been ailing during the summer and fall. Two weeks ago he contracted pleurisy and bronchitis, but was well on the way to recovery., when early on the morning of Nov. 26th, the heart long laboring under difficulties, suddenly ceased its action forever.
The funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church, Rev. James B. Bird officiating, on the afternoon of Nov. 29th. The body was laid to rest in the Monona cemetery.
