Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 14 Oct. 1909. Garnavillo column.
Maria Engel Nieman, nee Overbeck, was born on Dec. 6th, 1817, at Schledehausen Province Hannover, Germany. She remained here until the year 1854, when, with her husband, Herman Heinrich Nieman and two children, Gerhard Heinrich Wilhelm and Maria Elizabeth left the old home and journeyed to America and settled at Guttenberg, Clayton County, Iowa. Soon after their arrival here they moved to a farm in Jefferson township, where they remained until their removal to Garnavillo, which took place in the spring of 1886. For three years they enjoyed the retired life, when she was called upon to part with her husband, whose death occurred June 22nd, 1889. For a number of years she continued to reside in town when, owing to her advanced age and poor health, she was removed to the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. Brandt, where she remained until her death, which occurred on the evening of October 2nd. She had reached the ripe old age of 91 years, 9 months and 26 days. Those who are left to mourn her departure are Mrs. Henry Brandt and Gerhard Nieman, besides three grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
