Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 06 May 1909. Monona column.
Emmett J. English was born in Mendon township December 16th, 1881, and died at the home of his parents in Monona township, April 17th, 1909, aged 27 years, 4 months and one day. His early days were spent on the farm and in the public schools in this neighborhood and in this city. Following a preliminary experience he became a locomotive engineer on the C.M. & St.P. Ry., in October, 1906, which he followed until about a year and a half ago when he went to Colorado for the benefit of his health. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the Knights of Columbus.
The funeral was held on the 19th of April, at the Catholic church in this city, Rev. Father Lynch officiating, and it was largely attended by relatives and friends of the family. Burial in the Catholic cemetery.
Cut down in the prime of young manhood, when life seemed so much to him, and for which he had fitted himself for a useful and manly career. But disease when once in possession of the human body stands a barrier to the fondest anticipations of a promising career. We knoweth not what the hour may bring forth.
The family have the sympathy of the community in this their sad bereavement. A popular young man among his associates, a dutiful and devoted son, a faithful and true attendant upon his religious obligations, his reward is in a heavenly rest, free from all pain or care. His good works shall live after him, and be emulated in a spirit of love and veneration of a manly character.
