James Wilson Hold was born in Ross county, Ohio, July 13th, 1846, and died in Volga City April 21st, 1909. At the age of eight years he moved, with his parents, to Tiatt county, Ill., where he resided until sixteen years of age when he answered the call for volunteers and joined Co. D., 73rd Illinois Regiment of Infantry, known as the Preachers' Regiment. He took part in sixteen pitched battles and was wounded at Chickamauga from which he never recovered. He served his country for three years and was honorably mustered out at the close of the war. He engaged in the milling business at Springfield and in 1868 left for Iowa and located in Greene county. He moved to Volga in 1900 where he resided until his death. He was united in marriage with Rosetta Staring at Jefferson, Iowa, on Dec. 21st, 1876. To them were born five children, Georgia E., wife of the late W. H. Jones, Elsie B., wife of A. C. Fobes, Carrie E., Hazel L., and Leslie D. at home, who, with their mother and one sister, Mrs. K. T. Hutchison, of Lake City, are left to mourn a kind and indulgent husband, father, brother and one who was ever ready to assist those in need. He united with the Presbyterian church when a young man and lived a consistent member until death.
