Monday forenoon the people of Clayton county were terribly shocked by the news telephoned from Strawberry Point, that E. Schoeppe, a well known resident and stock buyer had committed suicide by hanging himself.

He had been at the stockyards that morning assisting in loading stock and appeared in good spirits, laughing and joking with those he met there. Afterwards he came down and then went home.

Mrs. Schoeppe having occasion to go out of the house, saw Mr. Schoeppe's body hanging in the driveway of the corncrib, and at once screamed. Her screams attracted the attention of Chas. Blanchard and Jake Ludy, two carpenters, who were working near and they with the assistance of Rev. Mr. Graf cut the body down. It was thought that life was not extinct, and a doctor was called for, and everything done to save his life, but it was all in vain.

Mr. Schoeppe was a highly respected citizen, devoted to his family, and always ready to assist the needy. All are at a loss to find a cause which impelled him to commit the deed. He was financially in good shape and it is not known that he had any troubles.

He leaves a wife, a daughter, Mrs. J. C. Wilkins, and one son, Herman, of Arlington, a daughter, Bertha, at home and a son Carl of Strawberry Point.
