Clayton County Register, Thur., 07 Jan. 1909.

Karoline Hartman was born in Hanover, Germany, April 01, 1840, and peacefully passed away in this city surrounded by her children and other kindred, December 30th, 1908, aged 68 years, 8 months and 29 days.

In 1845 she came with her parents to the United States and located in Indiana, but in 1852 they came to Iowa, locating in Read township, Clayton county. On March 17, 1859, she was joined in wedlock to J. B. Schmidt and for a time they resided on a farm but later on came to Elkader where she since made her home, her companion having passed away May 17th, 1900.

Deceased was the mother of 13 children, six of whom are yet living. They are: Mrs. Pauline Katschkowsky, of Elkader; John C. Schmidt, of Seattle, Washington; Mrs. Minnie Kleinpell, of Elkader; Robt. F. Schmidt, of Elkader; Henry C. Schmidt, of Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Lizzie Jeffers, of Elkader; also two brothers, Fred and William Hartman, and two sisters, Mrs. Sophia Meyer and Mrs. Lizzie Aeggerter, of Nebraska, and nine grandchildren and other relatives.

Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon in the Congregational church, conducted by Rev. Franke, of the German church, and was attended by many old neighbors and friends from far and near, who came to pay their last tribute of respect and love to their departed friend, for "none knew her but to love her." Mrs. Schmidt was one of those kind hearted old ladies who was always doing something to make others happy, to whom it was more blessed to give than receive, and her cheerful, happy face will be missed, not only by kindred, and loved ones, but by all who knew her. She was a typical mother and for such there is peace and rest in eternity.
