Charles Petrehn, 83 years old, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Randall, here, Tuesday of last week, following a short illness with pneumonia.
Mr. Petrehn was born in Linkoping, Sweden, Aug. 27, 1851, where he received his early education and grew to young manhood. When a young man he served an apprenticeship in learning the tinsmith trade in Sweden. In 1871 he came to America, settling at Lansing, Iowa, where he resided for some time, working at his trade at Lansing and New Albin. He also successfully operated a hardware store at New Albin for some time, and also resided on a homestead in North Dakota for a time. For a number of years he was employed as custodian and tinsmith for the Hormel packing company at Austin, Minn., retiring and coming from there to Guttenberg to reside a number of years ago. Mr. Petrehn was also engaged in the commercial fishing business at Round Lake, Minn., for a time, and also was a resident of La Crosse, Wis., previous to coming to Guttenberg to make his home.
On March 17, 1878, he was married to Miss Caroline Johnson at New Albin, Iowa. Of late Mr. and Mrs. Petrehn had been making their home with their daughter, Mrs. William Randall, and family, of this city. Mr. Petrehn was a man of a pleasing personality.
He is survived by his widow; one son, Alfred, of Austin, Minn.; three daughters, Mrs. William Randall, of Guttenberg, Mrs. William _ailey. of Wis___k, N.D., and Mrs. Henry John, of _____land, Wis.; __ grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. Two sons have preceded the father in death.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. _. A. _____, pastor of St. Paul's United Lutheran church, of Guttenberg, at the William Randall home in this city on Friday afternoon, with burial in the city cemetery.
