Clayton County Register, Thur., 29 Nov. 1934.

Grace Helena Thein, wife of Peter J. Thein, of near Garnavillo, was born on May 24, 1887, at Manchester, Iowa, the daughter of the late Joe and Mary Carlson Andrews. She passed away at her home 15 minutes before 12 o'clock on the night of Nov. 16, at the age of 47 years, five months and 22 days, in the presence of her family and a dear neighbor lady who had been her friend for many years.

She lived with her parents at Manchester during her childhood and young girlhood, going to school there, and after her high school years became associated with Mrs. Brunson in dressmaking and sewing. On March 18, 1908, she was united in marriage to Peter J. Thein, the ceremony being performed at the home of her parents. For the first two years of their married life the Theins lived on the Joe Jones farm near the Woolen Mills near Manchester. From there they moved to Volga township and later to their present location in Garnavillo township, where they bought the farm they have lived on for the past nineteen years. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Thein, one daughter, Marion, now Mrs. Dutka, living near the home place, and two sons, Carol and Henry, at home. The three children, her husband and four grandchildren survive her. Her parents and her only brother, Harry Andrew, died several years ago.

A malady that constantly sapped her health and the drain on her strength made necessary by the fact that she aided in caring for her husband's aged mother, who made her home with them the past seven years, and who was a helpless invalid, having to be cared for like a little child, made her most susceptible to the final attack of illness. She was seriously ill for two days and two nights, but did not suffer much, medical aid and her family's loving care doing everything possible to prolong her life and spare her suffering.

The funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the home and at St. Paul's Lutheran church, Rev. J. H. Harder, pastor, officiating. Interment was made in the cemetery there. The casket was borne by six neighbors, the Schaub brothers, Charles Reimer, John Meyer, Ernest Backhaus and Sam Seemon. The church choir sang several selections during the services at the church, which were held at two o'clock. The funeral was very largely attended and the wealth of floral tributes spoke of the great esteem in which Mrs. Thein was held.

The family has the sympathy of the entire community in their great loss. Mrs. Thein was a faithful, devoted wife and mother, a loyal friend, a woman whose family and home ties were very dear to her. She will be sadly missed by her little grandchildren who were her pride and joy.
