James W. Brown, son of James W. and Jane Hewitt Brown, was born April 19, 1872, in Mallory township, Clayton county and died at his home in Colesburg on Friday evening, October 26, 1934, as a result of heart trouble.
During boyhood years Mr. Brown attended the local public school and took an active part in community activities.
On February 15, 1898, he was married to Etta Flenniken who remains to mourn his departure. After his marriage he worked in the creamery at Cassville for one year. He then moved to a farm north of Colesburg where he resided until 16 years ago when he moved to Colesburg. In recent years he had engaged in stock buying until his health failed.
He was a member of the Constellation Lodge No. 67 of Free and accepted Masons of Colesburg and also of the DeMolay Consistory of Clinton.
Two half-brothers, John C. and George W., and three half-sisters, Malinda Moreland, Mary Young, and Laura Prentice preceded him in death.
In addition to his widow, four brothers, Frank, Bruce, Jake and Charles, one half-brother, Joe, all of Mallory township, and three sisters, Mrs. Lillian Blaker, Mrs. Maggie Beddow and Mrs. Ida Knee survive him.
Funeral services were held from his home in Colesburg on Monday afternoon, October 29th. The opening service was conducted by Rev. Nothdruft of Colesburg, followed by a short Masonic service. Interment was made at the Brown cemetery.
