Clayton County Register, Thur., 25 Oct. 1934.

William Ernest Meyer, son of Henry Meyer and his wife Frederika, nee Schwale, was born in Elkport, Clayton county, Iowa, Feb. 23, 1860.

On Nov. 4, 1885, he was united in holy wedlock to Miss Julia Bauman, and to this union four children were born, the eldest, a son, preceding the father in death.

Mr. Meyer lived all his life in Clayton county. After their marriage, they lived with his folks for ten years. In 1895 they bought their own farm about three miles northeast of Littleport, where he lived up to the time when he retired in 1915, living in Littleport up to his last illness and departure.

The deceased remembered what he had vowed on confirmation day. He was instrumental, in fact was the one who encouraged the people to organize a congregation and build a church, of which work he never tired. Not only was he a faithful worker for the upbuilding of the church and community, he was a true upright Christian at heart, and remained in faith to Him in whose name his church was built and dedicated, the Triune God.

About three weeks ago he contracted a severe cold, and in his weakened condition was unable to regain his former health and strength. All was done by loving hands to prolong his life, but his condition became alarming and a nurse was called. With the help of wife and children, all in their power was done. During his last illness his soul did not want for comfort of prayer and word of God, receiving holy communion Oct. 5th. He entered into his reward of eternal life Oct. 12, 1934, at 4:40 p.m.

A sister, Mrs. Dora Heiden; a brother, Henry, preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his departure his helpmate, two daughters and one son, Mrs. Alvina Voelker, Ryan, Iowa; George Meyer, Elkader; Mrs. Mabel Meade, Washington, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Zahrndt, Elkader; five grandchildren, besides a very large number of friends who will miss him. He reached the age of 74 years, seven months and 19 days.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 14, 1934, at the home of the deceased in Littleport at 1:30 p.m. and at 2 p.m. at Hope Lutheran church. Interment was made at Union cemetery at Littleport, the Rev. F. E. Damm in charge.
