Samuel Howard Lathrop, a resident of this community for nearly seventy years was called from this life Wednesday evening, Feb. 19, after an illness of only two days.

Mr. Lathrop was born in Medina county, Ohio, May 12, 1839. When a small child he came with his parents to Walworth co., Wisconsin and lived for several years on the shore of Lake Geneva and near Delavan, coming to Iowa April 22, 1860, locating on a farm eight miles north of Manchester.

August 24, 1862 he was married to Miss Ruth Gifford at Edgewood and to this union were born three daughters and two sons: Mrs. Louis L. Martin of Dumont; Mrs. Lillian Wain of Ft. Dodge; Mrs. Grace Miles of Stockton, Calif.; L.G. Lathrop of Strawberry Point and G.L. Lathrop of Oelwein.

Mr. Lathrop enlisted in the Union army Aug 1862 and was made sergeant in Co. F., 27th Iowa infantry. Mr. Lathrop took part in fifteen battles, the hardest fought of which was the battle of Pleasant Hill. Mr. Lathrop was honorably discharged Aug 8, 1865. He then resumed his occupation of farming.

In 1888 the family moved to Strawberry Point. Mrs. Lathrop passed away in 1921.

Mr. Lathrop was a member of the Congregational church for nearly fifty years and until unable took much enjoyment in helping with the music of the church. Besides being a member of the G.A.R. he was a member of the I.O.O.F.

Funeral services occurred in the Congregational church Friday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. S.L. Unger. The American Legion and the I.O.O.F. attended in a body and the interment took place in the family lot in the local cemetery. Besides his five children he leaves seventeen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, besides other relatives and a large circle of friends.

In the passing of Mr. Lathrop, the oldest civil war veteran of this place has answered the final taps and only one old veteran now remains.
