John F. Ihde, long-time resident of this community, passed away suddenly at his home Sunday evening. Apparently he was in his usual health and enjoyed a social evening with his family. Later he complained of not feeling well and on reaching his room collapsed on the bed. Medical aid was summoned immediately but death came shortly after he reached his room.
John Friederich Ihde was born in Garnavillo township, September 12, 1858, a son of Friederich and Sophie (Kluss) Ihde. In a family of seven children but one brother is living today. Mr. Ihde died at the home of his birth on Sunday evening, at about 8:00 after having spent a social evening with the members of his family. He attained the age of 75 years nine months and 13 days.
He was united in marriage with Miss Anna Catherine Thoma, at Clayton Center, March 28, 1879. He rented a farm in Read township for ten years and then operated a store in Garnavillo for one year. Preferring the farm, he purchased the home place and remained there the balance of his life.
Mr. Ihde was a member of the Lutheran church all his life and served St. Paul's Garnavillo as a council member for ten years. While it was physically impossible for him to attend services during the past few years, he maintained his interest in the affairs and support of his church and last received Holy communion on Easter Sunday of this year.
He is spoken of as a kind father and good neighbor, although his interests varied, he seldom was away from home preferring to spend time in keeping up and improving his property.
His wife died November, 1919, and three of his nine children have also died. He leaves one brother, Fred of Lincoln, Nebr., and the following children: Mrs. Caroline Kurdelmeyer, Monona; Mrs. Lizzie Kurdelmeyer, Monona; Mrs. Charlotte Weiss, St. Olaf; Benjamin F., Read township; John and Amanda, at home; also 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
