Clayton County Register, Thur., 21 June 1934.
GUTTENBERG: Victor Walz, one of this community's pioneer residents, passed away at the home of his son Frank in Clayton township on Friday evening at 9:30 at the age of 87 years and nine days, his death being mostly due to old age. Mr. Walz was born in Switzerland on June 6, 1847, a son of Anselm and Maria Anna Walz. When six years of age he came to America with his parents and settled at Guttenberg, Iowa. The remainder of his life was spent in this community. Sixty-one years ago he was married to Miss Mary Seidel, who preceded him in death on Feb. 17, 1932. After their marriage the couple settled on a farm in Jefferson township, where they resided for a number of years. Thirty years or more ago Mr. and Mrs. Walz came to Guttenberg to make their home. Since the death of his wife Mr. Walz had been making his home with his children, where he always received the tenderest of care. Four children also preceded the father in death. He is survived by four children, Mrs. Mary Schaefer, of Plainfield, Iowa, Mrs. Joseph Ley, of Dubuque, Jake Walz, of Read township, and Frank Walz of Clayton township; a number of grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. John Wolters, Sr., of this place and Mrs. Elizabeth Egleseder of Sandstone, Minn., and numerous other relatives and friends, by whom he will be sadly missed. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. H. Sharphoff at St. Joseph's Catholic church at Garnavillo on Monday morning, with burial in St. Mary's cemetery at Guttenberg.
