Sarah Margaret Bergemeyer, daughter of Edward and Margaret Bertsinger, was born December 9th, 1877, at McGregor, Ia., and died at her home in Elkader at two minutes past twelve, midnight, June 3rd. Mrs. Bergemeyer reached the age of 56 years, 5 months and 4 days.
Mrs. Bergemeyer was baptized and confirmed in the episcopal church in Chicago, Ill. After coming to Elkader she became a member of the Evangelical church and the Frauen Verein. She was also an active member of the Eastern Star.
On November third in the year 1904, she was united in marriage to Embert Bergemeyer. Two children were born to this union, Marjorie and Norma, both at home.
In the year 1911, Mr. Bergemeyer was elected sheriff of this county at which time he and his wife took their home here. This office he held for eight years. From April 1st, 1928 until January 1st, 1933, he was in charge of the County Home for the insane. Mrs. Bergemeyer willingly and faithfully shared his labors with him while he conducted these two institutions. She often voiced her sympathy for the unfortunate patients in the asylum and did all in her power to make the patients as contented and comfortable as possible.
The deceased was a loving mother and faithful wife and her kind and considerate ways for others won for her a large circle of friends.
Although Mrs. Bergemeyer and her family realized that she was not enjoying the best of health for the past several years they did not consider her ailments serious. On February 15th, of this year, she fell while in Dubuque. She was brought to her home and the bruises she sustained treated. From that time on she was confined to her home and for the past several months to her bed. One complication after another set in and in spite of medical care and all that loved ones could do for her she was called upon to endure much suffering until the Angel of Death called her to her reward.
She leaves to morn her departure her husband, the two above named daughters, a brother Edward of Woodward, Ia., an aunt, Mrs. Martha Rook of Minneapolis, Minn, other relatives and a host of friends.
Services - June 5th - at the late home at 1:30, at the Friedens Evangelical church at 2 o'clock, interment at McGregor. The Frauen Verein and Eastern Star attended in a body. The Eastern Star officiated at the grave. Services were conducted by the Rev. P. Kitterer.
